5-Color Magic The most electrifying format in Magic
Synergy and Disruption Often times the complexity of Synergy and Disruption go misunderstood, which results in some players who see the overwhelming value and brokenness of cards while other players do not. It's important to keep the abilities of cards in context. I hope this article enlightens those of you who don't understand why rulings exist and remind those of you who are in the decision making process what to consider. I hope to run through some examples of cards, but may not cover all common possibilities. Synergy “The interaction of two or more agents or forces so that their…
I like cantrips. A lot. I've been intrigued by the simple notion of a spell not costing a card since reading an analysis of a Counter-Rebel deck. In this particular instance, Brainstorm was a powerhouse. Since the deck was inherently reactive (countering spells on an opponent's turn, searching out Rebels at EOT), Brainstorm was certainly a reasonable fit in a deck with no first turn play other than Ramosian Sergeant. Brainstorm was pushed over the edge by the multiple shuffling effects, as well as the occurrence of cards in the library that you didn't want to draw (multiple Lin Sivvis,…
Over the next few weeks, I'll be sending Rob some old, classic 5-Color related e-mails that were either sent to the mailing list or to someone personally. I would like to thank Nick Little for the assistance, sending me several e-mails which are sure to be posted. Some of them may or may not have strategic value, but all of them will strike a chord with most 5-Color players. The first e-mail is from Tobey Tamber, formerly of a small town north of Pittsburgh who attended Valparaiso University in Indiana and met up with Justin Freiberg and other players who…
Every week Ben, Bill and myself try to get together and play MTG, and since I’m out of article ideas right now I’ll let you know what happened on 2/7. We were able to get 3 games in over 3 hours, first game went 1.5 hours followed by a 1 hour game and a speedy 30 min game, I had to leave by 10:30 to get home and walk the dog and see my wife, laugh all you want….so here’s the recap: I’m playing a Graveyard Recursion Deck, Ben a Counter Sliver Deck and Bill a Rebels Deck. Game 1…
I can still remember that first day I was introduced to 5-color. The players from Lake Country Comics (the birthplace of 5-color) had come to Amazing Adventures to show me the light and like wildfire I began to construct my five color deck with wild abandon. It did not matter what I played, there was no rhyme or reason to the cards I stuck in my 300 card monster deck. No one had heard of beatdown, combo, 1-2-3 contract or any other such non-sense. I was throwing in Spirit of the Night, Shivan Dragons, Xanthic Statue, Thundermare, Royal Assassin, and…
As I was pondering the restricted list in 5-c, I noticed that recent sets have including an inordinate amount of tutoring. The problem is that in five, tutors have an exponentially greater effect. Consider the following cards which will tutor for any card: Demonic Tutor Vampiric Tutor Demonic Consultation Mangara’s Tome Divining Witch Diabolic Intent Diabolic Tutor Insidious Dreams Gamble Planar Portal Rhystic Tutor With the exception of Vampiric Tutor, none of them cost hardly any money at all, making access easy for everyone. You could even include Intuition and Grinning Totem on that list, but I’ll choose not to…
