5-Color Magic The most electrifying format in Magic
After a couple of abortive attempts at running a 5-Color Qualifier, we actually got to hold one this time. We’ve started running them the same day as Grand Prix Trials, since most area 5C players aren’t too keen on playing in the Trials (this one in particular – Mirrodin Block sealed the weekend after the COK Prerelease? Ugh.). We had eight players ready to go, so we started the Q, single-elimination style. Round 1: vs. Ava I got a good draw both games against her. Ava had a very mana-heavy draw in game 1, fetching out a couple lands with…
The Five Color Feud I polled 80 5-color decks and I’m about to put the top answers on the board. While I’m no Richard Dawson, if you’re new to 5-color, this show might be just the place for you to start. If you’ve played for a while, check the lists for gems you might have missed. You could even play a game with these lists. Print them out and take them to your favorite Magic event. While waiting for the next round, see if you and your friends can guess what cards come up in each color as the most…
Bushido Codes were followed by the Samurai Class for over 1,000 years. Regardless of any combat style or art, the principles applied to all who would be more than simple thugs. These same principles apply today, and separate the honored warriors from street ruffians and cowards. I - HONESTY AND JUSTICE (GI) The samurai strived to be acutely honest throughout their dealings with all people. They believed in justice, not from other people, but from themselves. Honesty is not easy to discern from outside a player’s heart. It is the honest or dishonest player themselves that knows for sure whether…

Still Life - “250” Color Curve Set your lands and your calculator aside. If you can count to 10 and know your 5 MtG colors, you’ve got all the tools you need. We’re going to paint with your spells today, and get a top-down view of your 5-color deck. Clear a 2 foot by 3 foot space, your “canvas”, on your favorite table or floor, and what you’ll end up with is a “still life painting” of the inner workings of your 5-color deck. Separate your spells by casting cost and then by creature / non-creature spells. For these purposes,…
Mana. Nobody wants “too much” of it, and no one wants “too little.” You’re a professional. Your five-color deck is your vehicle. It may be an eighteen-wheeler, a police cruiser, a getaway car, a cab or a formula racer. Each of these machines has something in common, an engine. When you cruise the streets, there are high stakes and you must ensure your engine is finely tuned. We’re going to calibrate, balance ratio, tune, time, check fluids, mix fuel and then run a full diagnostic. Your deck is going to leave here purring like a cat. After that, your driving…
Every time a new set comes out I read the spoiler and identify cards that I’d like to have for five-color Magic (5c). Commons and uncommons I traffic only in foil, rares never in foil. Herein you’ll find my picks for Champions of Kamigawa (ChK), strategic, flavorful, or curious. If you’re a meat eater only, you may want to skip the soup. It is simmering over the next two paragraphs. And now for something completely different… The Double Jack Double Stack Flashback! When we play 5c5-color, we usually find ourselves at a pub or tavern of some sort, drinking and…
Another 5-color Worlds has come and gone, and just as you all expected, I was able to regain the title from fellow Madison player, Jim Hustad. I hinted all year that I was going to play an Academy based deck, and I did just that. I'm not gonna lie...I didn't lose a game of 5-color in the tourney. The deck is THAT dumb........just like myself ;) And now to the decklist. This archetype has been revised so many times in the past many years that it hardly resembles the stuff that Dustin Stern would play. Mirrodan block has been ridiculous.…
There hasn't been a good combo deck in type 2 in a very long time(combo winter Academy being that last very good one). Wizards has intentionally nerfed combo so that it would not get out of hand again. Expensive engines, expensive card drawing and the lack of quality finisher cards has kept combo down in type 2. They can do this because they control the format exclusively and do not have to worry about interactions with previous cards. Combo decks in Type 1 are small, streamlined and consistent. They do their thing very well because of the fact that they…
So you want to build a 5-Color deck. This is an article about building your first 5-Color deck. If you’re here, you probably want to get some insight into how the format works. I’ll start by saying why 5-Color might be the format for you. Because 5-Color decks have to support all five colors, there are a lot of different types of decisions made each game. Normal type two decks are usually one- or two-color builds, taking advantage of everything that those colors are good at. Here, we use all the best things from each color and watch how those…
